Description

Estazol (Albendazole) is a broad spectrum Benzimidazole derivative which is effective against different types of worms and is active against all stages of the helminth life cycle i.e. ova, larva and adult worms. Albendazole exhibits its larvicidal, ovicidal and vermicidal activities by blocking glucose uptake of susceptible helminths, resulting a depleting energy level until they become inadequate for survival. Albendazole initially immobilizes, and then kills the susceptible helminthes.

Estazol: Tablet: Each tablet contains Albendazole USP 400 mg. Estazol Suspension: Each 5 ml suspension contains Albendazole USP 200 mg.

Estazol is indicated for the treatment of single or mixed infestations caused by the following helminths: Pin worm (Enterobius vermicularis), Whip worm (Trichuris trichuria), Large round worm (Ascaris lumbricoides), Hook worm (Ancylostoma duodenale & Necator americans), Thread worm (Strongyloides stercoralis) & Tape worm (Taenia spp.). Estazol is also effective in Echinococcus granulosus infection or hydatid disease.

Adult and Children over 2 years of age: For various types of infestation (except tape worm & thread worm), the usual dose of Estazol is 400 mg i.e. one tablet or 10 ml suspension (2 teaspoonful) as a single dose. For thread worm and tape worm, a single dose of 400 mg is given for three consecutive days. If the patient is not cured on follow up, after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment should be administered. For pin worm infestation 400 mg as single dose and another 400 mg after 7 days can be given. For hydrated disease 400 mg 2 times daily for 28 days in three cycles are given. Intervals of 2 weeks are needed between 2 cycles or as directed by the physician. Children under 2 years of age: Albendazole has been evaluated in children under 2 years of age where a single dose of 200 mg (1 teaspoonful) was found to be effective in common helminth infestation. For pin worm infestation, 100 mg of single dose initially and then after 7 days another single dose of 100 mg is advisable. In Echinococcus granulosus infection (Hydatid disease) the dose is 10 mg/kg body weight for 28 consecutive days.

During normal treatment GI-discomfort, headache, diarrhoea may occur. In case of hydrated disease allergic reaction, increment of liver enzymes, leucopenia and alopecia may occur due to higher dose.

Women of child bearing age (15-40 years) should be administered within 7 days of the start of normal menstruation.

Pregnant or likely to be pregnant woman should not take Albendazole as it was found to be embryotoxic and teratogenic in rat & rabbit.

Estazol 400 Tablet: Box contains 50(50x1's) tablets in blister pack. Estazol Suspension: Bottle contains 10 ml suspension.
