Ibandronic acid inhibits osteoclast activity and reduces bone resorption and turnover. In postmenopausal women, it reduces the elevated rate of bone turnover, leading to a progressive gain in bone mass. The absorption of ibandronate occurs in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
